Merry Christmas
Language Land

A Christmas Project with all Grades in one primary school.
1st Graders

First Graders, aged 7
They have been learning English at school for only half a year, one lesson per week.
I use a lot of games, puzzles, playing body, rhymes and songs to learn English with them.
They are very enthusiastic and quick learners.
Their goal was to present
- colors
- numbers
So the scarves they could desing themselves, also the number of coal buttons :)

2nd Graders

Second Graders, aged 8
They have been learning English at school a year, one lesson per week. They started last year when they were 1st Graders.
Some of them have chosen an obligatory English Club where we learn vocabulary with games and playing.
I use a lot of games, puzzles, playing body, rhymes and songs to learn English with them in regular english lessons too.
Their goal was to present
- Verbs
So we decorated beautiful Christmas ornaments with verbs they could choose themselves!
We hung the ornaments from the ceiling and when we have a project day, all pupils in our school will stop at each ornament and perform as the verb tells them to :D

3rd Graders
Third Graders, aged 9
One of our schools principles is positive pedagogy. We have been learning about children's strengths in Finnish.
So third Graders decided to give our school presents and gifts! Some beautiful character strengths to all of us.
They could design the model themselves and write different character strengths in bold letters on them.
Third Graders have been learning English for only two years.

First Graders, aged 7

4th Graders

Fourth Graders, aged 10
In Finland the Santa's little helpers (tonttu) start to sneak around before Christmas to write down the names of good children on Santa's lists.
We have been learning about verbs and adjectives with 4th Graders.
So! Fourth Graders presented elves who are funny, cute and busy, just to name a few, and can do all kinds of thing!
So:
I am.. (adjective)
I can... (verb)
They filmed short movies with Green Screen-application and created QR-codes which the little Santa's helpers carry.
QR-codes make the little elves come alive! ;)

5th Graders

Fift Graders, aged 11
Fift Graders have been learning how to compare adjectives and use the phrase "There is.. and There are.." as well as buildings in a city.
Joensuu has a beautiful river with many bridges, so 5th Graders began to create a wintery town of Joensuu.
They built 3-dimensional buildings, painted beautiful night sky and in the sky flies Joulupukki with his reindeer! Joulupukki, the Santa, lives in Korvatunturi, Lappland, Finland, as everyone knows.

6th Graders
Sixth Graders, aged 12
Sixth Graders had a task to create Christmas Movies in the theme of famous movies like:
The Grinch, Nightmare Before Christmas, Tatu and Patu, Joulupukki and the Witch's Drum (Mauri Kunnas)
They were free to film, direct and act as they wanted as well as plan the manuscript.
Some decided to use Green Screen technology, some made animations and some took still pictures to illustrate their story.
All of them have a lesson to be learned in all stories.
From the movies we collected an advent calendar.
